Journalism isn’t just about exact, bland presentation of facts. Using creative ways to use camera angles increases the way you can tell a story. I enjoyed Mastering Multimedia’s blog about using your camera creatively. Creating stories that are visually interesting opens up the interpretation of what the role of a journalist is at least in my own mind. Although I’ve been working as a writer for quite some time I’ve had little interest in calling myself a journalist because of my preconceived notion that it would mean I was producing little more than hard facts about ’serious’ topics. Using video or audio to tell stories is by far more interesting to me, and in a world obsessed with contrived reality I can see why journalism is heading that way. Just look at how all consuming reality programming has become.

the appealing aspect of online storytelling is the ability to have diverse presentation of a story. Having the opportunity to use slideshows, audio and video in addition to the written word to present a story is an interesting opportunity.

I’m particualarly interested in telling stories through audio content, with ‘man on the street’ pieces. Podcasts like Street Stories or This American Life are insights into the life of people I may have nothing in common with but they have interesting stories to tell.

If anything I think there’s a culture of disinterest that has happened as the result of news outlets turning to ‘gossip’ style journalism, with footy players and Paris Hilton on the front page. I have no doubt that it is now these type of stories that seem to bring in advertising money and sell papers but if I want to get news information I enjoy reading a variety of voices from all walks of life. This is more of a personal reasoning behind a shift. I also enjoy getting news from around the world, and with a newspaper like the Herald Sun which has such a huge emphasis on sport, followed by entertainment like news and ‘celebrity’ commentators, there is a very limited amount of news reported that is of interest to me. I enjoy reading entertainment and sports news just like anything else, but I look elsewhere when it comes to heavier reading. Online news sources are accessible, free, and offer the opportunity to browse and move on…
