Cultures of Journalism: The Future of Journalism…

The discussion regarding the objectivity and the future of journalism in regards to young people and where their news is coming from is quite an interesting debate. As someone who gets most of their news through podcasts, blogs and the comedic style news programs mentioned in the discussion, I think it’s quite interesting to assume this means a laziness in terms of processing or intepreting information. If anything I think there’s a culture of disinterest that has happened as the result of news outlets turning to ‘gossip’ style journalism, with footy players and Paris Hilton on the front page. I have no doubt that it is now these type of stories that seem to bring in advertising money and sell papers but if I want to get news information I enjoy reading a variety of voices from all walks of life. This is more of a personal reasoning behind a shift. I also enjoy getting news from around the world, and with a newspaper like the Herald Sun which has such a huge emphasis on sport, followed by entertainment like news and ‘celebrity’ commentators, there is a very limited amount of news reported that is of interest to me. I enjoy reading entertainment and sports news just like anything else, but I look elsewhere when it comes to heavier reading. Online news sources are accessible, free, and offer the opportunity to browse and move on…
